In addition to performing microbiology testing on patient specimens, the Medical Technologist Specialist must perform one or more of the following specialized duties or other significant duties identified by the individual laboratory

  • Perform role of Key Operator for testing equipment.
  • Assist with the development, modification, validation, calibration, and implementation of laboratory equipment and working procedures.
  • Assist with quality projects and other data collection projects on a routine basis.
  • Serve as a resource person to medical technologists as well as other healthcare professionals.
  • Monitor stocks of laboratory reagents and supplies and reorder as necessary.
  • Advanced troubleshooting of automated instrument issues or manual test methods.
  • Assist Senior technologist in direct observation competency evaluations.
  • Assist Senior technologist with PT submissions.
  • Create/Organize training plan and material, and observe Medical Laboratory Science students, new employees, and pathology residents in bench procedures and theory.

Perform Testing

  • Maintain expertise/competency in all areas of training, always putting patient work ahead of specialized duties.

Professional Development

  • Fulfill departmental continuing education requirement.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

  • Administrative supervision is received from a Supervisor or Manager.
  • Functional supervision may be received from a qualified Senior Technologist, or Supervisor, but is not required to report test results.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

  • Functional supervision may be exercised over Medical Technologists, Laboratory Technicians, and other assigned staff.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Works with infectious disease and/or hazardous materials.
  • May have exposure to noise from laboratory equipment and pneumatic tube system.
  • Requires frequent (standing/walking/sitting/hand pipetting) for long periods of time and the ability to lift up to 25 lbs.

In order to be considered for this position the applicant must have met or will have met all the required qualifications prior to the start date of employment.

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Laboratory Science or biological science is required as well as certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist or Medical Technologist or eligible to be certified. Specialized laboratories may accept a Bachelor degree in a biological science with certification eligibility in that laboratory.
  • Have a minimum of 2 years of post-training experience in a relevant clinical laboratory for the duties described
  • Must have demonstrated ability to perform the duties of an MT at a high level of expertise, and the ability to perform the assigned work without sacrificing on patient care.
  • MLS or specialty certification is highly desired, and may be a consideration in highly specialized laboratories
  • Time management skills and the ability to accomplish extra duties while completing patient work.

This full time, 40 hour position is on the night shift and will require rotating weekends, holidays and on-call with other staff. Will typically receive an average of 4hrs/wk (10%) to accomplish extra duties. This will vary at the scheduling supervisor's discretion based on the amount of MT Specialist work pending, and patient work on other projects that must be completed.

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the United Michigan Medicine Allied Professionals (UMMAP), which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours, and other terms and conditions of employment.

Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
