The Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (ADDL) provides high caliber veterinary diagnostic services to Ohio's veterinarians and livestock producers. The lab helps support a $6 billion industry by conducting more than 425,000 tests each year. The Serology section protects and promotes avian and human health by providing expedient and reliable avian serology services to Ohio's commercial poultry producers, as well as waterfowl, ratite and backyard-exhibition poultry, companion and exotic bird owners.

This posting is for two separate positions within the Serology Section of the Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory: Serology Laboratory Scientist 1 and Avian Serology Laboratory Scientist 1. The separate position descriptions are listed below.

Laboratory Scientist 1 (Avian Serology)

  • Performs basic serological test methods (e.g., ELISA, AGID, plate, tube, card agglutination, latex agglutination) within the Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (ADDL), (e.g., compares test results within established parameters)
  • Prepares daily reagents and media, performs quality control, equipment calibrations and prepares related materials for testing that are assigned by supervisor
  • Provides test results to appropriate individuals in accordance with agency-established guidelines, ADDL Quality System standards, and standards required by the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians (AAVLD) quality system or as established by USDA regulatory guidelines
  • Reviews and revises ADDL SOP's as assigned
  • Provides back-up testing for other sections as assigned
  • Prepares and maintains work-related documentation
  • Accurately maintains test result record systems
  • Transfers original test results onto laboratory worksheet and/or official regulatory forms
  • Maintains tracking system that provides a record of test results
  • Coordinates, compiles, and transfers laboratory module results onto regulatory forms and/or computer system
  • Maintains quality control records for each test system
  • Operates computer to input data supporting laboratory reports and statistics
  • Sends out results
  • Responds to inquiries from external sources and/or general public
  • Maintains files as per record retention policies
  • Cleans and maintains laboratory and equipment
  • Attends internal and external meetings as required
  • Participates in special projects as assigned
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

Laboratory Scientist 1 (General Serology)

  • Performs basic serological test methods (e.g., ELISA, AGID, plate, tube, card agglutination, latex agglutination and fluorescent polarization assay (FPA) testing) within the Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (ADDL), (e.g., compares test results within established parameters)
  • Conducts brucellosis testing to determine classification of livestock moving in and out of Ohio
  • Prepares daily reagents and media, performs quality control, equipment calibrations & prepares related materials for testing that are assigned by supervisor
  • Provides test results to appropriate individuals in accordance with agency-established guidelines, ADDL Quality System standards, and standards required by the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians (AAVLD) quality system or as established by USDA regulatory guidelines
  • Reviews and revises ADDL SOP's as assigned
  • Provides back-up testing for other sections as assigned
  • Prepares & maintains work-related documentation
  • Accurately maintains test result record systems
  • Transfers original test results onto laboratory worksheet &/or official regulatory forms

This position shall be filled in accordance with the provisions of the OCSEA Collective Bargaining Agreement. ODA bargaining unit members have selection rights before non-bargaining unit members. Maternity Benefits

  • Expanded maternity health care benefits available to state employees enrolled in the Ohio Med PPO and Ohio Med NN (narrow network) medical plan options. Several prenatal, childbirth, and post-childbirth services are provided at no out-of-pocket cost to employees utilizing network providers.
  • Examples of services now covered by network providers at 100% include:

o Prenatal care, including physician visits and examinations.

o Home health care services designated as maternity care (for expectant members on bed rest).

o Inpatient claims for all types of delivery.

o Inpatient NICU claims, from birth through discharge.

o Postpartum care, including office visits for follow-up, and procedures/treatments directly related to maternity.

  • Medications prescribed for both antepartum and postpartum conditions (e.g., morning sickness, postpartum depression). Medical services provided by non-network providers will be processed at the applicable coinsurance, deductible, and out-of-pocket limits.
  • Prescription drugs that are directly related to maternity care are covered with no copay. The State of Ohio has collaborated with the prescription drug third-party administrator (OptumRx) to provide a list of covered medications that can be approved for zero copay via prior authorization from providers.

30 months pertinent laboratory experience commensurate with job duties to be performed as outlined per approved position description on file.

  • Or completion of associate degree in a biological, chemical, natural or physical science; 12 months pertinent laboratory experience commensurate with job duties to be performed as outlined per approved position description on file.
  • Or completion of undergraduate core coursework in a biological, chemical, natural or physical science.
  • Or equivalent of Minimum Class Qualifications For Employment noted above.
